Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When she was young her father was a carnival barker and left her mother no option but to become a cleaner woman and waitress to provide for the family. Ruth was raised in a tenement community that was poor in Boston, Massachusetts, where she went to school. Following only two school years the young woman left to pursue the acting career. The path was difficult to take. While she was offered an opportunity at a theatre in New York posing as a woman for a magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that were offered to her. Following a short stint as a club hat girl after which she decided to come back to her home in Massachusetts and leave her job. The New England Repertory Company was the first position she held as an actor who was steady. She earned money by working during the day as an usherette. Also, she studied drama. She ultimately graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
